Nuclear
Power Plant

TRM design, supply and install a wide range of products for the nuclear power generation industry. We specialise in hazardous areas and carry relevant certification to supply such applications around the world.

In recent years, there has been a movement towards modular reactors to aid with fast deployment around the world, supplying low carbon electricity to even the most remote communities. This, in turn, reduces global reliance on fossil fuels and helps prevent climate change.

TRM provide solutions to several Small and Advanced Modular Reactor developers around the world. With the capability to connect any time of day to discuss requirements and support with reactor design, our aim is to provide the developers with the knowledge to design using the most suitable, cost-effective and enduring products.

Our core products revolve around mineral insulated cable, but if that is not the best solution to the application, we will utilise other technologies, without bias.

Trace heating
Mineral insulated (MI) electric trace heating systems are being used in a wide range of applications. It is generally felt that the use of MI electric trace heating systems will be beneficial due to their durability.

Temperature measurement
Our thermocouples and RTDs continue to be used across all UK nuclear power stations, and waste handling facilities. They are used across sites, from non-critical applications through to reactor critical circuits.

Signal cables
Mineral Insulated Cables can be used to transport signals through the harshest environments. Each cable is designed bespoke by TRM’s technical team to suit its environment, most commonly multiple cores.

Neutron Flux Detectors
Various types of technologies are used for neutron detection, TRM produces Mineral Insulated triaxial cables for detectors used at elevated temperatures, where plastics are not an option.

CSP / Renewables
MICC CSP

CSP is an exciting and growing market which could account for up to 25% of the world’s energy needs by 2050.

Electric Trace Heating is critical to prevent the freezing of molten salts (60% sodium nitrate and 40% potassium nitrate, from 207°C), Heat Transfer Fluid (Biphenyl ether mixture, from 12.3°C), synthetic oil (15°C) and water & condensates (0°C).

As such Trace Heating is vital to the Thermal Energy and Heat Transfer System as well as the Balance of the Plant. If the materials in pipes, flanges etc. are not heated and the liquids solidify, the plant will be forced to stop creating significant downtime and cost to repair.

Our trace heating units have been used all over the world to turn electrical energy into heat and to compensate for the heat losses from the pipe to the colder ambient temperature.

The operation temperature in CSP applications is up to 560°C, and as such only one type of Heating Cable can be used: Mineral Insulated Cable.

We manufacture our own Mineral Insulated Cables and as such can offer total traceability in the configuration of our Heating Units to ensure the most reliable quality.

There are numerous companies who say they are experts but if they do not manufacture the Heating Units, how can they guarantee the quality of the solution?

We have seen what can go wrong on numerous CSP projects all over the world when the Trace Heating solution is not designed, installed or controlled properly. Why take the risk?

We have considerable experience working on Trace Heating projects in CSP.

Fire Survival In The Construction Industry
Construction site

Thermal Resources Management has a long history of supplying both the commercial and industrial construction industries. From the 1930s BICC were manufacturing and installing the same seamless tube Mineral Insulated Fire Survival Cable as we make today in Churches across the UK… much of it is still working today!

The construction industry represents a unique challenge in terms of promoting our fireproof and heating cable products. To ensure our products are used correctly we work at all levels of the supply chain. This helps end-users ensure they get the right product at the highest quality but also the best lifetime cost!

Please review the following sections on how we can specifically help each part of the construction supply chain.

End Users
When it comes to who has the ultimate responsibility for the safety of the people who will eventually use a new building the end users/owners must surely take on this mantle.

Why? Because they or the building in their building will be the ones who in the event of a disaster or major emergency like a large-scale fire will be the first to face the trauma of it.

It’s their staff, tenants, guests, visitors, commuters, patients and even perhaps pupils that will experience things first-hand and will rightly expect the building to have the very best lifesaving systems…. Regardless of cost the alarm, emergency lighting, ventilation, access, firefighting and suppression systems etc must do the job they are required to do… they simply must work!

Consultants
After the End Users / Building Owners have decided to start a project very early on they appoint a design consultant. This may be a direct approach or for large scale projects may be in the form of a tender where a consortium of companies might win a package of work within the budget set by the client.

When looking specifically at the choices made for the Fireproof cabling in a modern building two important factors are usually considered; how long must the circuit work for and what standard must the product meet.

Once the egress time is decided, usually upwards of one hour to ensure the building users have time to escape with the lifesaving circuits still operational, a suitable standard is called for to ensure the products used fit for purpose.

Contractors
When it comes to the actual construction of a building then the contractors employed are on the front line. Their knowledge and experience are vital to ensure the end-users dream and the consultant’s plans are realised in the desired way.

However it is rarely a straightforward task, even the best-laid plans can need a little tweaking to ensure they work. The critical thing here though is the consultant, designer or architects and contractors are on the same page. If the contractor doesn’t know what a specified standard or product is they may not know how to use it correctly or where to even source it from. Sometimes what is not understood is feared and contractors rightly will do all they can to ensure they complete their part of the construction in the shortest time to the lowest possible cost. Read more here.

Distributors
We believe that in order to have the greatest potential to save lives through better specification and use of fireproof cables all levels of the supply chain must understand the real-World situation.

As the pages in the Fire Survival Wiring section area of this website demonstrate, the fact is soft skin cables do not give the performance they or current standards infer. It is not that they are poor cables, more that they are often used incorrectly or relied upon to give survival times which they have no hope in meeting.

Distributors and wholesalers are vital to the construction industry and play a very important role in providing products quickly and to the required standard. They are also ideally placed to give an extra layer of advice/peace of mind to contractors/installers by being able to help recommend and demonstrate the proper use of retailed products.
