MI Signal Cables

Mineral Insulated Cables can be used to transport signals through the harshest environments, such as radiation, vacuum, high or low temperatures and highly corrosive mediums.

Each cable is designed bespoke by MICC's technical team to suit it's environment, most commonly single or multiple cores, with coaxial or triaxial construction. The materials used are selected to meet the demands of the environment, using the best raw materials, and seamless tubes. Our manufacturing process can utilise either a traditional drawing and annealing route, or hammer-swage and anneal. Hammer swaging is often specified in high radiation environments where low losses are required, in terms of leakage current while maintaining a high insulation resistance.

These cables are made in our plant in the United Kingdom.

Alternatively, we can work to client specifications, to provide a like-for-like product to meet a drawing specification.

Neutron Flux Detectors

Since neutrons have no charge, very little mass and almost zero magnetic moment, they are not directly detected. Their presence is detected by measuring the ionisation that occurs after they collide with the nucleus of another material. The exact type of ionisation depends on the detector material.

Various types of technologies are used for neutron detection, MICC produce Mineral Insulated triaxial cables for detectors used at elevated temperatures, where plastics are not an option.

Typically, in Nuclear Power Generation the electrode of the detector is connected to the 'world outside the reactor' by an MI Cable. Our triaxial cables consist of a conductor, insulation, shield to act as an electrical screen against noise, insulation, and an outer sheath for mechanical strength. The two sheaths are for seperate instrumentation and reactor earths. The operating temperature tends to be around 550C, which MI Cable can withstand comfortably.
